Ways to Relieve Stress
When thinking of ways to relieve stress, it is important to take a close look at your diet. It is common for people to use food as a way to comfort themselves and this is especially the case in times of high stress. Although some people eat the wrong foods when they get stressed, which can lead to weight gain, food is actually the answer to reducing stress. The key point is that it is healthy foods eaten in moderation which will ultimately reduce your stress levels rather than high fat junk food.
Fresh fruit and vegetables eaten with every meal can help to boost your self esteem and energy levels as well as reducing stress. Food which is canned or frozen often contains sugars and preservatives as well as numerous other chemicals and is therefore less beneficial. Try to choose food which is unprocessed, that is, in their natural, raw state. Raw or lightly steamed vegetables are very healthy as eating them this way ensures the highest intake of vitamins and minerals. Try to buy organic whenever possible to avoid harmful pesticides and other toxic chemicals. The reason eating fresh fruit and vegetables is an excellent way to relieve stress is that they contain natural mood enhancers. You can get a natural high just by eating well and this is especially the case if you eat healthily over the long term.
Try to avoid eating heavily processed foods, especially fast food and anything fried. It is also advised to keep meat to a minimum and when you do choose to eat meat, choose a lower fat cut or a small piece of high quality meat. Again, it is advisable to go for organic meats as these are a much healthier option. Meat is important in your diet as it is an excellent source of protein but they contain saturated fats which can be bad for your long term health if you eat too much.
The way to a healthy diet is to enjoy everything in moderation. The key is to find the right balance of foods. Don't try to cut out one entire group of foods as this may upset the natural balance. While you don't want to eat too much fat, fats are still very important to your diet. You need fat in your diet; just try to stick to healthy fats such as olive oil. Also when thinking about balance in your diet, you should think about how much you are eating and how often. It is generally best to stick to 3 healthy meals a day, avoiding snacks in between meals. Plan your meals according to the food pyramid recommended by nutritionists and keep your portions realistic. It's unlikely that you will be able to, or want to, follow the food pyramid all the time but try to stick to it for 90% of the time. On those days when you do stray from healthy eating be sure to do a little extra exercise to make up for it.
While eating healthily is a good way to relive stress it won't be entirely successful if you don't do any exercise. It is important to do at least 30 minutes of exercise every single day. If you want to be healthy in the long term then you must exercise. It is this combination of diet and exercise which is one of the best ways to relieve stress.
What we eat and how much exercise we do has a significant effect on our stress levels. A balanced diet and regular exercise is a relatively easy way to deal with stress. High fat junk foods can have a negative effect on your mental health and they are best avoided. Eating lots of fresh fruit and vegetables along with lean meat and fish should be the first step in your stress relief program.
