Although it is possible to quit smoking cold turkey, most people find they need help to stop and you should get help to quit smoking. Why make a difficult task even more difficult by not accepting help.

Although you may think that stopping smoking is an impossible task, try to remember that thousands of people do quit smoking every year. They are no different from you and they have managed to quit. Keep in mind that they probably had help quitting and that is why they were successful. Don't think that just because you have been smoking for many years that it is now too late to give up. The body is excellent at healing itself and even if you have been smoking for decades, you will still significantly reduce your chances of getting cancer by stopping smoking now.

While stop smoking aids such as nicotine patches and nicotine gum are helpful aids, probably the number one aid is willpower. You won't be able to quit smoking without willpower. You must want to quit and have people willing to help. Learn about the health benefits of quitting. Speak to people who have quit and ask them how much better they feel now. They might even be able to give you some tips to help you quit. Think also about the amount of money you will be saving if you quit smoking. Add up how much you spend per day, week, month, and year. Think of how much money you have already wasted on cigarettes. The amount can really add up. Do you really want to continue spending that much money on something that might end up sending you to an early grave?

Set yourself both financial and health and fitness goals to help motivate you at times of weakness. You might decide to spend the money you will save on a holiday, or to buy a luxury item you thought you could never afford, or you could spend the money on gifts for those people that were kind enough to help you. Your health and fitness goals might include being able to go jogging non stop for 30 minutes or to swim for an hour. Whatever you weren't able to do before because your smoking was hampering your ability to breath. Have a fitness test at your local gym both before and after you have quit smoking. You might be surprised at just how much you can improve your health and fitness in a few short months.

Willpower and the help of others are crucial if you want to successfully quit smoking. Plan ahead and set yourself goals. Think of these goals when you are craving a cigarette.
