Benefits of Quitting Smoking

There are many benefits of quitting smoking and even though it is a very addictive habit which most people find difficult to break, you should still try. It is difficult to quit for two reasons. For one thing, nicotine is a physically addictive drug. Secondly, there is the psychological addiction as a result of smoking being a social habit. People smoke when they go to a bar, they smoke during breaks at work, they smoke after dinner. These are just lifestyle habits and even though smoking cigarettes is generally socially acceptable, it is a habit which needs to be broken both for your health and for the health of those around you.

An indicator as to whether your attempt to quit smoking will be successful is how prepared you are for it, more specifically how mentally prepared you are for it. You have to honestly want to quit and if you only go half heartedly into in or if someone is pushing you then you won't be successful in your attempt. If you lack the motivation to quit then just think of the health risk if you continue to smoke. There are many benefits of quitting smoking.

The health risks associated with smoking are well known and therefore the benefits of quitting are quite obvious. In case you need reminding, smoking cigarettes is very dangerous for your health and you are putting yourself at serious risk if you continue to smoke. If you smoke you will have a significant risk of premature death or long term breathing problems. Smoking cigarettes greatly increases your chances of suffering from heart disease and lung cancer. You are also putting those people around you at risk. If you smoke in front of your children and other friends and family members then you are putting their lives at risk, especially if you smoke around them over a long period of time.

If this isn't enough to motivate you to quit then think of the benefits of quitting smoking if you do. You will quickly find that your sense of smell will improve. This will increase your enjoyment of food and drinks. Your sleep and breathing will improve. Your fitness levels will improve. Also consider the amount of money you will save. Cigarettes are generally very expensive and they are only going to get more expensive. A significant benefit of stopping smoking is that you will save thousands of dollars and that is not an exaggeration. Calculate it for yourself. When you first stop smoking put the money that you would normally spend on cigarettes into a jar and see it quickly grow. Use this money as motivation knowing that in a month or so you can buy something for yourself with the money you have saved.

Keep reminding yourself of the benefits of quitting. Think of the health benefits for yourself. Think of the health benefits for your family. Think of how much money you will save and what you can buy with that money instead. There are no negatives to quitting smoking so there is no reason not to do so today.
