Cure Insomnia With Exercise

If you have ever spent an entire day being active, running around after your children or playing sport, you have probably found that being physically tired has made it easy for you to fall asleep. You were probably exhausted and there was no chance of you suffering from insomnia. Of course that isn't the case for everyone. Some people find that intense activities get the heart rate up and stimulate the mind so instead of drifting off to sleep, they find that the exercise is a cause of insomnia.

Keeping our bodies active through regular exercise is important for the obvious health benefits but also as it can be a natural cure for insomnia. If you choose the right exercise and do it at the right time you will be able to fall asleep quickly. They key is to choose exercises which relax the body and muscles as opposed to exercises which energise you so much that sleep becomes almost impossible.

One type of exercise which is perfect for helping you to get to sleep is yoga. Yoga has been around for centuries and is a series of breathing and stretching routines which tone the body. Yoga classes can be found in most cities and some offer free introductory classes so you can get an idea of what is involved. If you find you enjoy yoga it is something which can be quickly and easily incorporated into your everyday fitness regime. It can be practiced anywhere, you don't have to go to a class. It is therefore a great workout which you can do at home or when travelling. Once you fit these exercises into your everyday routine, you may find that falling asleep and sleeping well will become part of your routine also.

Another excellent exercise to combat sleep disorders such as insomnia is walking. The important thing to remember about walking is when to do. If you go for a strenuous walk just before going to bed in the evening you might find that your muscles are tight and you are unable to relax enough to fall asleep. Your body needs a cooling off period before you go to sleep so the benefits of walking as a treatment for insomnia can generally found by going for a walk at least a couple of hours before you go to bed.

If yoga and walking don't work for you then try swimming. Swimming is a more relaxing exercise, both for your muscles and for your mind. If you go swimming in a public pool, try to find one which has sauna or spa facilities as well. Taking a sauna or spa before bed will help you relax and prepare you for sleep.

Exercise can be a great natural cure for insomnia, however, the success of this treatment depends on the type and timing of the exercise. If you're not careful you may end up causing rather than treating your insomnia. Choose a relaxing exercise and do it regularly and you shouldn't have a good chance of sleeping well.
