Baby Won't Sleep

It is impossible to list all the different skills you need as a parent. There are always new things to learn and different decisions to make. Unfortunately some things can only be learnt by experience or by trial and error. It is important to educate yourself by reading and talking to other parents but in most cases it is just as important to trust your instincts. One of the most difficult things you'll have to learn as a new parent is how to get your baby to sleep through the night. Achieving this can be part science, part knowledge, and part luck.

There are many baby sleep tips available but before you go researching everything there is to know about putting a baby to sleep, you should try to be realistic. If your baby won't sleep, don't stress too much about whether or not you are doing something right or trying to apply many tips at once. Be observant and take note of how your baby reacts in certain situations. The point, after all, is to find out how to get your baby to sleep through the night. It is also extremely important to be flexible. Be open to different ideas and don't be afraid to implement them. Remember that some of the best ideas are often the simplest so there is generally no need to treat your baby's sleep problem too seriously. Babies often have difficulty adjusting to sleeping on there own, it's only natural. So if your baby won't sleep, or you are having trouble putting your baby to sleep, the best solution might just be to be patient.

The first thing you'll need to do is to look closely at your baby's sleeping habits. One of the keys to finding a solution is to look at your long term goals. It may be that all you can think about is how to get your baby to sleep at that moment so you can get some sleep yourself but this probably isn't the best attitude. Your long term goal should be to get your child into a sleeping routine which will provide her with healthy sleeping habits for life. You can achieve this goal by being both flexible and realistic. Your baby is unlikely to sleep in the same way every night. It's normal for your child to have to odd night when she doesn't sleep well. It's nothing to be concerned about. It's more important to be concerned about the environment in which she is sleeping. An environment which is conducive to sleep is likely to be somewhere fairly quiet, with little chance for her to be disturbed, in a room which is relatively free from dust, and where she can get fresh air. In these conditions, your baby is more likely to fall asleep on her own and to sleep through the night.

Probably the best thing you can do to help your child develop a healthy attitude towards sleep is, to a certain extent, not to interfere top much in her natural sleeping habits. If your baby won't sleep then you can try to manipulate her habits but it could be a mistake to be too aggressive or too rigid in your actions. This could end up in long term sleeping problems for you child. While it is good to have a routine you don't want to be too strict with it. If your baby is sound asleep then you shouldn't want to wake her just to stick to your schedule. The same goes for putting her to bed. If she's not tired then it is best to keep her out of bed until she calms down and becomes drowsy. This way her sleeping habits will be more natural; going to sleep when she is tired and waking up when she has had enough sleep.

Adults who suffer from sleeping problems can often trace their problems back to when they were a very young child. What you teach your child now will most likely affect them for a long time to come so try to be easy going about sleep. If your child won't sleep then it is likely that she isn't tired so be patient and wait for her to fall asleep naturally. If your force her to go to sleep at a certain time she will probably just lie awake in bed anyway which is what will most likely lead to poor sleeping habits in the future. So be patient, be flexible and in the long run both you and your child will sleep well.
