Baby Sleep Patterns

Even though there are so many joys to being a new parent there are also less pleasant aspects of having a baby in the house and one of them is dealing with their sleep patterns. It is completely natural for a baby to want to sleep a lot but what is important is to get the baby to sleep on their own. Until the time comes when the baby has developed a regular sleep pattern you will probably find yourself with many sleepless nights. The best baby sleep tip is to develop a sleeping routine for your baby so they become used to a pattern of sleeping which enables them to more easily develop adult sleeping habits when the time comes.

You may be tempted to let your baby dictate his or her sleeping pattern but this can be a huge mistake. A baby needs a routine, a pattern of sleep, and it is up to you as the parent to establish that routine. Try to set a sleeping routine as close as possible as to how an adult would sleep. This can be achieved in two ways. Firstly, you should be putting your baby to sleep in the same way each night. Develop a regular pattern which the baby will come to recognise. A typical routine might involve feeding, changing, and then playing with the baby. Don't put the baby to bed until she becomes tired, thus enabling her to fall asleep on her own without you having to hold her or be in the room. If you put the baby to bed when she is not tired you then run the risk of her not being able to sleep or her wanting you to stay with her all night long. Developing a regular sleep pattern is crucial for ensuring long term healthy sleep habits.

The second technique for getting your baby to sleep through the night is to try to set a pattern to suit your own needs. You could do this include discouraging excessive napping during the day as this would result in your baby wanting to sleep less during the night. It could also involve not letting your baby sleep late in the morning. If you are up the baby should be up too, within reason of course. You don't want to interfere too much with your baby's sleeping pattern. If the baby really wants to sleep then let her sleep but you can use subtle methods to influence your child. For example, only let your baby nap in a brightly lit room. This should prevent her for sleeping for too long which would affect her sleep during the night.

The best way to get your baby to sleep through the night is to develop a sleeping pattern which resembles your own as closely as possible. Only put the baby to bed at night once she is tired, don't let her sleep too late in the morning, and keep naps to a minimum.
